UCPD Encounter #2 - 11/03/1998|
Ran into a UCPD today while leading the Tuesday 8 pm group trials ride (7 people in all showed up, 3 trials riders (including me, but not including the 2 who showed up way late), and 4 freestyle/street bmxers) through campus... We were riding on the roots of a tree (these are big roots) up past Powell, and she pulled up in her cruiser and was watching us. I said, hey guys, let's move on. They say ok, and I start to go by myslef up to Public Policy, but no one follows me, I wonder why and come back, then notice too late that the policewoman is already lecturing them. She says something about receiving a complaint, and I say, "What?! really?" outloud... I was really surprised... Anyway, she let's us off with a warning and tells us to not ride on her trees anymore... So we "leave"... uh, er, move upwards on campus and keep on riding anyway...
Oh, I forgot to mention that this was the SAME policewoman that kicked me off campus months ago for riding on the fountain at the quad. (and she was so nice about it that time, when it was just me, and I was friendly. oh wait, no, Pedro was there, but when he saw her coming, he just split "off into the sunset" as the cop said.). I'm glad she didn't recognize me.
Anyway, we ride up to the sculpture garden, and I thought it would be fun to ride on this sculpture. So I'm hopping on this sculpture made of welded steel I-beams (like I'm gonna damage that), and this random guy (in his late 20's - 30's) was walking by and said something like "I hope you get arrested for riding on that"... We payed him no attention and eventually made our way down to the front of URL and we were messing around in front there, when the policewoman comes back with a big security guard and shouts, "OK everybody over here now!" Now I'm thinking we're screwed. We're all gonna get tickets... She asks what we're doing. Pedro says something like, "We weren't riding on trees..." (as per her former command).. She asks in rhetoric, "How old are you mentally? Like 10?" This policewoman had an attitude problem. She asks if we were riding in the sculpture garden (yup, that guy must've called them up), and we're all totally silent. She asks again and Pedro once again speaks up, saying "We just rode THROUGH the sculpture garden, we didn't RIDE in there." Well put... Anyway, it comes down to this ultimatum: If I catch you again, I'm confiscating your bikes... You're leaving campus now... Make a bee-line for westwood...
That totally sucked... I couldn't believe it... We (Eric and I, the only ucla students at the ride) ride back up to the dorms and our friends go home. Eric mentions that he was supposed to meet this street rider Jon at Public Policy at 10:00, so I offer to go tell him to go home (riding my XC bike in totally different clothes with no helmet, so there's no way I could get in trouble). I ride over there, and he's not there, so I start riding back up to the dorms. On the way back up, I notice an Observed Trials Magazine bumper sticker on a car, and I do a doubletake... It's my friend's girlfriend's car! Two trials riders from Glendora were supposed to make it up at 8, but were late and didn't find us. I panic, afraid that they'll get caught by that policewoman... I speed around campus looking for them, and find them riding down bruin walk, luckily, right away and tell them the whole story... Anyway, we rode around (well I just watched, I was on my xc bike...) some, and his girlfriend took video. While we were at the top of bruin walk, Rob was gapping some big stuff, and this bike CSO rides by and says "That's a violation of school policy." without even stopping... Rob was pissed, he really wanted to ride. We split up around 11:45 and I went back to my room.
Well, at least I didn't get arrested for riding on that sculpture! =P
