VP caged pedals vs. Hammer 3Z shinguards

I'm writing this with a sizeable gash in my left shin... I was wearing my Hammer 3 Z shinguards, out riding where it was kinda wet, and apparently some water got on my feet or pedal or something, and when I dropped off a picnic table (i'll admit it wasn't perfect form, I landed with my weight too far back), my left (FORWARD) foot slipped off the pedal, and WHAM! the pedal comes around into my shinguard... Classic reason for wearing shinguards, right? Right... I immediately say, "I'm SOO glad I'm wearing shinguards!" as I feel the dull pain of a bruise forming in my shin, followed by warmth, which of course was followed by alarm in me, thinking I was bleeding.. I rip off the shinguard and (dear God!!!) blood!!!  ;-p  This piece of crap shinguard ripped in half where the pedal hit, letting one of the little sharp things of my VP caged pedals right on in to say hello to my shin...

Now, I'm not really bugged by another scar, or the incovenience of an open bloody wound, I'm really more annoyed that it happened even though I was wearing protection, which leads me to ask: What are GOOD shinguards? I'm talking something with hard plastic in them or something... Maybe a knee-shin combo would be perfect, as I've been smacking my knees up on my 19" XC bike when doing trials moves on it.... I'm gonna give Hammer hell for this... Man...

Ok, i'm done bitching and complaining, back to your regularly programmed GT bashing or whatever... ;-p

Update: I bought Roach Dual Slalom pads (knee/shinguard combo with hard plastic for the shinguards...). Only bad thing is they're HOT, but they work great...
