Fontana, California - 2004 event dates

Story by Jon Maeda

The final Southridge Park Biketrial for the summer went off without a hitch on Sunday, July 18th in Fontana, CA. The organizers expected a small crowd, so there was some surprise when 14 riders showed up. Especially gratifying was seeing 1st timer Kenny Bench competing, on the donated bike that was won by UCLA's Manning Yuan, at the conclusion of the 2004 Spring series. Bench bought the bike, which was donated for the raffle by BikeTrials.com's Stephen Maeder, from Manning, so the bike is getting some use in it's intended purpose.

While the heat made for a slightly smaller turn-out, the heat was on in the Stock Sport class, with perennial class leaders Terry Elam & Ian Hoffman fighting it out for top honors. Elam edged out Ian by a scant 4 points and 3 cleans, in this, Hoffman's first event since his horrific Keyesville wrist injury. Frank Loro finished 3rd, bringing pride to Flagstaff, AZ, while Nic "HopHopSnap" Gross made the journey from Visalia worth his while in 4th place.

Stephen Maeder displayed his skills in taking the win in Expert Stock over Nathan Heronen of the PATH Bike Shop. Heronen endeared himself and the PATH to the riders, as he donated a PATH t-shirt to all the entered riders. Thanks Nathan! The PATH hosts group rides out of their Tustin shop every Tuesday night, so if you can swing it, make the drive over to check out their growing urban scene. Trialsking Pete Sturtevant (3rd place Expert stock) did just that one night...now he considers himself a sponsored rider!

Beginner Stock Jeff Thompson rode solo to a class win, as did Thomas Elam in Beginner Mod. Lone Expert Mod rider Jon Bott rode his last event before starting the Fall quarter at Cal State Sacramento in the Fall. 2 Pro Mod riders started the event, while Zak Maeda persevered in the heat to finish, as old-schooler Jason Dunnahoe got burnt out by the 95 degree temps.

All assembled seemed to enjoy the post-event watermelon feast. The next SoCal event is the Kernville Fat Tire Festival, in Kernville, CA Held the weekend before Halloween, Oct. 23-24th, this event includes great free camping and tasty sections. More info to follow. Next Fontana event is Sunday, November 21st!

Thanks again to Nathan Heronen & the PATH Bike Shop for the cool t-shirt donation, and to BikeTrials.com for the Hans Rey Story DVD that was raffled off at awards. Special tip of the helmet to Christina & Maribel for checking, as well as to all the riders who checked. Zak Maeda set the sections...thanks Zak!
